Why Piplette Baby?

Monsieur and Madame Pipelet are two characters created by Eugène Sue. This couple of doorkeepers from the Rue du Temple, in the Mystères de Paris, made readers in France laugh out loud, between 1842 and 1843, through daily episodes published in the Journal des Débats. Alfred and Anastasie Pipelet take care of the affairs of the building with energy, giving their opinion on the morals of the inhabitants, fulminating against one, complaining about another, chattering about a third.

One might wonder why Eugène Sue chose to name his characters Pipelet. This word could come from the same root as the verb "piper", i.e. "to speak or "to say", a term that is still used in the expression "il ne pipe mot". As early as 1854, the word "pipelet" and its feminine "pipelette" designates a concierge, they quickly become synonymous with a talkative person.

Nowadays, parents lovingly call their daughters "Piplette" when the child is cheerful, happy and chatty...
